The story of two cinematic trailers!

It was around January starting when Nakul contacted us for his wedding photography. Details and concepts were shared, and we gave a brief description of how we see Indian weddings.

The conversation shifted to a call, and he shared he had a couple of not so good experiences in the service industry, that makes him trust people not so easily with their work. I understood I am dealing with someone who was promised service, but later faced disappointment. Immediately, I shared one of my client’s interview talking specifically about the customer experience my company provides. Nakul called me the next day to fix up a meeting. But since he was in Canada, he shared he is unable to come for an in-person meeting. However, Aditi would like to meet me.

So, we fixed up a meeting with Aditi. I knew this one will be a little tough to crack.

The Meeting

When I met Aditi, I started to showcase the wedding films we have done in the past. The discussion began.

However, Aditi seemed not much interested in the work that I was sharing. She was attentive with her ears but not with her eyes. I could sense a strange restlessness in her. Accompanying her was Nakul’s sister, Gunjan.

The questions I usually hear from brides were all coming from Gunjan. Aditi however had a faint smile on her face, looking almost lost. A hot cup of coffee arrived and gave a pause to our discussion. I got a chance to ask Aditi if she is looking for anything specific and she immediately responded. Udit the work is fine! No questions there. But there is one thing that I am worried about.

The work that you showcase is nice. I am convinced that you are a master at your craft. But the people in these videos and the photos that you share. I do not know them personally. Hence, I do not know, if the couple liked the trailer and other films, or is it just another creative video. For, creativity is subjective. One may like it and spend a fortune to get it, and another person might wonder, why did I even pay for this.

Product Vs Service: The Real Concern

The real concern however was something different. She loved the product that I shared but was worried about the service aspect of it. Such is the world of wedding photography. It is easy to be lured in, or to lure in a customer but to provide with a delightful experience is another skillful art. This is such a recurring question in a wedding photographer’s life that it is almost mechanical to answer it. Why do you charge what you charge? Other vendors charge less and deliver a similar looking product like yours!

Aditi was one such customer that I was delighted to meet. Because she was concerned about the price but not just for the price! She knew a wedding film is everything else but accepting something that does not resonate with her. She knew she has a taste and a personality of her own. So does the person she is getting married to. And it would be necessary for that to reflect in the films, as per her liking.

And that has been my answer to the question always! Why do we charge what we charge? Because we deliver an experience and service. The photos and videos are in effect, a by-product of the UD experience.

We aim to deliver memories that you can resonate with for life. That takes patience and a team, to happen. Not the photography team though. That is, you and ME!

I like it, but I cannot share it!

We decided upon the feel and soul of the trailer and films. But after the wedding, when we delivered the trailer, Aditi did not like the final thing that came up. As previously shared, we capture and deliver completely authentic natural moments. We try to stay as less intrusive as we can. But sometimes what we capture are those rare fractions of moments which are good to witness but not to share.

The trailer delivered was a piece of art. What do you think? But it is a fact, that the wedding trailer is presented to the families. And not everything can be shared on the screen while presenting the trailer to the families.

There were a few people who were active in the events but were not close to the family, lot many candid fractional close shots of the couple which she was not comfortable sharing in the trailer and tons of other such small things, which appeals to a man or woman but the couple prefers to not share it in the trailer for it has to be viewed by everyone in the family.

Hence, we decided to change the trailer completely. We reworked the theme of the trailer presenting it in an entirely different way. It required a complete rework on the edit. Took double the time to accommodate the change thereafter. But our goal was met. Aditi was finally happy and in love with her trailer.

It takes a willing team of two you and me to deliver a piece of art that appeals to your heart and the families. Providing good photos and films is an art but making a piece that warms up every heart and still can be shared with everyone is a different experience called UD.
